So... This is my most recent post... today actually.. but it has caused quite a bit of discussion... hm...
So,
As I'm reading the book, "Great Singers on Great Singing"... a quote stuck out to me. John Alexander said "Voices are like fingerprints; there are no two alike in the world. God gave each of us our own unique sound, and if we can build on that, then we have built on a firm foundation." As I am delving further and further into the world of singers, I've come to really dislike the flippant way singers analyze and tear down the voices of their colleagues and even professional singers. I can in no way say I am innocent. I've voiced my dislike for a certain singer on more than one occasion, but I plan on stopping now.
As I can speak only from my own experience, my voice is a very important part of who I am. It is the sound that God gave me, to be improved upon, but the core will never change. I'm sure there are many who prefer other voices over my own and that's there opinion. However, if I was to hear someone bash my voice the way I've heard people do to others, it would feel equal to hearing someone expressing dislike for my face, body, family, friends, or person in general... possibly even more hurtful considering the amount of work I put into my voice as opposed to any of the other things listed.
I've found young singers especially guilty of this, since they also have the added element of feeling the need to prove their knowledge of opera is superior to those around them. There is a difference between being confident and condescending. Obviously, everyone has a preferred tone/sound, and im sure everyones ideal is different also, however the callous way people talk about voices, can be tamed. As overused as it is, the "do unto others" suggestion will go far with this problem. Obviously, some singers have more control, a clearer tone, a richer voice, or more amazing high notes than others, but it doesn't negate the value of the less trained/agreeable voice.
I hope to be able to control my tongue and that we would at least think before they speak in regards to other singer's most precious and fragile part of them, their Voice.
Thoughts?
